Here’s today’s entry in the Christmas books with pretty covers category:
The Burglar and the Blizzard: A Christmas Story was written by Alice Duer Miller and illustrated by Charlotte Harding and published in New York by Hearst’s International Library Co. in 1914. Looks like the designer of the book’s cover has the initials G.H. (see right side of cover, below tree — maybe it’s C.H. for Charlotte Harding?). Do any of you collectors or specialists in book bindings know of of a book designer with the initials G.H.?
Interestingly, the story is not listed in the online bibliographies of the work of either Alice Duer Miller or Charlotte Harding. This is a book that needs more research, for sure. I’ll have to go to the reference books — one of my favorite things to do.
I found a summary of the story here. Apologies for the photo image. My scanner, which usually produces a higher quality image, is broken. My dishwasher is still broken, too. Did I mention that Thoughtful Husband’s car broke down yesterday as well? When it rains, it pours!
See you in the stacks!
