Chapter 564 Serendipitous Finds

Jeremy at Philobiblos wrote in 2008 about the library of Lady Jean Skipwith, “the most prolific female book collector in colonial Virginia (and quite possibly in all of America)”. He even catalogued her library over at LibraryThing. Imagine his surprise when, two years later while attending Rare Book School at University of Virginia, he went out hunting for books and he came across a book with Lady Jean Skipwith’s ownership signature on the title page!

As someone who is interested in books written by or about American women, I was intrigued at the fact that Lady Jean was an early female book collector and I could just imagine Jeremy’s happiness on happening across a book owned by a person about whom he’s already done lots of research. You can read all about it here.
