Thanks for your question about BOMC copies of books. Since I deal primarily in books printed before the existence of BOMC, I don't feel qualified to give you a definitive answer to your question. I can, however, send you a link to a blog post I wrote about book posts:

http://bookhuntersholiday.wordpress.com/2008/03/24/chapter-146-fishing-for-books-part-2/

If you read the post, you will see several links to other booksellers who discuss book club editions in great detail on their websites.

Good luck,
Chris

New Bookseller, confused about BOMC determination.
I have a book, Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1st ED only applied to 12,500 books pub'd by Simon & Schuster.
Great majority of books sold through BOMC. Title page states "Simon & Schuster, 1960". The copyright page in my book, states Simon & Schuster, "Fourth printing".

Now, here's where it gets interesting. I have the front and back flaps, no front or back panels of the dust wrapper. The front flap states "(continued on the back flap)". On the back flap, there is stated "A Book of the Month Club Selection". Now, do true BOMC books have the BOMC stated on the front flap? In my brief experience, the mere statement that the book itself is a BOMC 'selection' doesn't make it a BOMC printing. Please enlightening me. Thank you.

I think there is some confusion about Book Club Editions, and I plan to do a post about this in the future. Remember, that only in very rare circumstances is the Book Club Edition the first printing that would be desired by a serious collector. Book Clubs are notorious for using the exact printing plates that the publisher used; hence, you will sometimes see a Book Club Edition that states, "First Edition". This does NOT make it a first edition, and for those collectors interested in collecting the first edition (read: first printing) of a book, a Book Club Edition is almost never the first printing. Since it is not the first printing of a book, a Book Club Edition is worth much less than an actual first edition. I have thoughts about switching dustjackets, as well, but I'll save them for a future post.

I meant to say, "Excellent postings as usual. You really did need to break it up because"...

Had the rest highlighted and cut without replacing. The entire line was to be:

Once again I leave for a few days and it takes me hours to catch up.

Excellent postings as usual. You really did need to break it up because

Your six points are really common sense and all they really do is point out salesmanship is needed.

Anyone that has found themselves wringing their hands as described in these three posts needs to get off their duffs and start doing.

Getting away from the 'aquarium' book sales to book sales in general I have sold BOMC books on eBay for good money because I pointed out to people that BOMC is a good way to get an early edition for fewer dollars than firsts. - I've found First Edition (stated) books in BOMC DJ's and sold them with the BOMC DJ's (as opposed to throwing one or both away) because it is "one of the few and unique printings to be found this way." During the same time frame and with the same book other sellers had no bids.

Who is it that makes BOMC a bad word? (OK I know it is an acronym...) It is the booksellers doing it not the buyers! -

Salesmanship with integrity will sell books and bring repeat buyers. Find what the person you are addressing is interested in and let them know there are books on the subject.

Thanks for this posting and thanks for allowing me to rant a bit. I love it here! -XXXOOO-

I've noticed you mention, from time to time, the magazines FIRSTS and FINE BOOKS AND COLLECTIONS (as you did in this chapter). Have you ever read another equally wonderful book magazine entitled RARE BOOK REVIEW? See www.rarebookreview.com. It's a British publication. I purchase my subscription through International Media Service (www.imsnews.com)--a U.S. distributor. Like FINE BOOKS, RARE BOOK REVIEW is erudite, informative, and entertaining. I will never let my subscription lapse. Ever. I cannot live (happily) without any of these magazines.
