Dear Chris,
I just read your article. Very fine job indeed! And useful to neophyte antiquarian booksellers with a bibliographical bent. Glad to know that my book was of value to you. My bibliography could have been twice as long with more detailed collations (which exist in manuscript), but Yale could afford only a one-volume book. But I had the opportunity to write a better bibliography for Paul Mellon ("Books on the Horse & Horsemanship 1400-1942"---also published by Yale), which was sumptuously printed and illustrated and where production costs were no obstacle. My contract with Yale returned the publication rights to "Dickens & Dickensiana" to me once the book went out of print. But I see that there are plenty of copies out there. Happy book-hunting and bookselling. Warm regards, John Podeschi

[...] bibliographic principles are not hard to learn. I wrote about some books you can use to learn them here. Good bibliographic principles are numerous and, yes, somewhat tedious, and can be hard to remember [...]

I may have a house call coming up. Only problem is that quite a few of the books will be in French, a language I had 3-4 lessons in back in my 5th grade year.

Chances are I will end up visiting an elderly widower, making a new friend and help him find someone that knows more than I do that will give him a fair price.

Chris, great article! It made me immediately want to run out and buy reference books :)

When you write your house call article, can you talk about how you decided on your offering price for the set since you didn't really know its value until after you had purchased it and researched it?

WOW, Chris this an excellent ARTICLE!! Very interesting to read. Thank you so much for that.

And thanks also for the suggestion of some book titles to find. I have already purchased one book from Oak Knoll, and plan on buying more as my budget allows.
